How I rebuilt "Math Blitz" from 6.4★ to 9.1★ — the 3 prompts that actually shipped
First version of Math Blitz was a straight quiz. Answer right, +100. Answer wrong, -30. Players bounced after one round.
The breakthrough wasn't harder questions or prettier UI. It was the combo system. Once players felt momentum, every wrong answer felt personally insulting — they wanted another shot.
These three prompts did the entire 6.4 → 9.1 jump:
The wild thing is how cheap each one was. I had 4 prompts left in the budget. Used 3, banked one. The first one (combo bonus) carried 80% of the impact.
If you're iterating on a quiz/timing game, the cheap unlock is almost always **agency-after-failure**. Let players feel like they could've done better, not that the game cheated them. Open to feedback on whether the 3-second timer reads as fair on a small screen.
